Spring cleaning
Due to the amazing weather we have been having in Ontario recently, I decided to bring my summer clothes out from hibernation! It felt great to see those clothes again - it was like going shopping without the spending and wasting!
What I realized while going through my clothes is that I own many, many, many items of clothing that I do
not wear for one reason or another and yet, I am still determined to
keep them. THEN I go shopping for NEW clothes. Makes no sense, right? I don't think I'm alone on this one either.
So I made three piles
- clothes to keep
- clothes to sell at our spring garage sale or give away to Goodwill
- and finally, clothes that need reinvigorating - these are clothes that I would still love to wear, but for some reason, they don't fit quite right. Examples are: pants are too long (I'm short) and the cuffs are getting destoroyed, skirts that aren't the right shape, shirts, skirts that are just a bit too wide, items that have small rips or holes in them.
Surprisingly, in my 'reinvigorate' pile there are quite a few items I really WOULD love to wear (either again, or for the first time). Example - this crazy old rain coat my mom had in the early 90's... it's a long, pewter trench coat with black polka dots! It's amazing! I'd wear it as a regular coat any day - if only it wasn't about three sizes too big!
So, I'm going to my local and convenient mall tailor in the next couple weeks to get an estimate on how much it will cost for this little operation (I'm estimating 20-25 items). Then every couple weeks or so, I will go and take one or two items and have them reintroduced into my life again!
I'd love to take everything in at the same time, but alas, I am still a student and shopping is still shopping, even if it's for your old clothes! Patience dear.... patience.
Either way, I think this will help curb my desire to shop and buy new things when I neither need them or can afford them. Plus, it'll much, much less wasteful than shopping for new clothes.
I'm really quite excited!
