Can you hear me?

I want to quit destroying my hearing.

I love music. Always have, always will. But I've definitely seen one too many rock shows. And it shows in my hearing! So I've decided this summer that I'm going to start using ear plugs whenever I see a concert.

I know it sounds silly but it's actually not so bad. A lot of people use ear plugs at concerts. Which is good because then I don't feel so silly with pieces of stuff sticking out of my ears.

Anyway. To date, I've seen eight concerts this summer. I've worn ear plugs at maybe...four of those eight concerts. I know, but hey. It's a start, right?

Thanks for writing this... I thought I was the only one who couldn't enjoy a lot of concerts because of the volume! And not just because I'm leery of losing my hearing. I've found that, once the music gets loud enough, my ears start distorting it -- turning guitar riffs into squeals and whines.

So how did the ear plugs work out?

It's going well! And yes, it's strange. Once you start using ear plugs, everything sounds so much better. And then if you happen to take them out part way through a band's set, it's only then that you really notice how much damage you've been submitting your ears to.

Save your hearing while you can! ;)

It's good that you're starting to wear earplugs to shows. In fact, that's excellent. It's too late for me. The damage is done. Every now and again my ears still ring. Collateral damage I s'pose for the shows I've gone to. It wouldn't be such a shame if they were all great. Now when I go to the beach I can't tell if it's the ocean or it's my ears! JK...sorta.

This is great. Siouxie & the Banshees at Club 1064 in Miami Beach, 1987. A friend of my Dad's took me and lost his hearing for a month! Ouch. I felt really bad. I'm amazed I still have any hearing at all.

The last loud show I went to was Beck and we bought ear plugs from the coat check person.
